Do I Really Need a Doula?

If you’ve been asking yourself this question, you’re not alone. Most people don't know what a doula does, or even what a doula is! You might have heard the word in passing, seen it on a birth Instagram page, or had a friend mention they had one; but beyond that, it can feel a little unclear.

So let’s take a step back.

Not “Do you need a doula?” But rather, what kind of support do you want during one of the most vulnerable, intense, and life-changing experiences of your life?

What does a doula do?

A doula is not a medical provider. We don’t replace your doctor, midwife, or nurse. Instead, we focus on something that is often missing in modern care: consistent, personalized, whole person support.

That looks like:

  • Helping you understand your options so you can make informed decisions

  • Supporting your partner so they feel confident and involved

  • Offering physical comfort measures during labor (movement, positioning, hands-on support)

  • Holding a steady and calm space when things feel overwhelming (bringing the *vibes*)

  • Helping support you emotionally through the entire pregnancy, birth and early postpartum

And in postpartum:

  • Supporting your recovery

  • Helping you adjust to feeding, sleep, and newborn care

  • Creating space for you to be cared for, not just the baby

So… Do You Need One?

No. A doula is not a requirement for a positive birth or postpartum experience. But here’s the more honest answer: Many people don’t realize how much support they need until they don't have it.

Because today’s medicalized birth environment often looks like:

  • Short prenatal appointments

  • Busy hospital staff (who may be amazing, but stretched thin)

  • Lack of continuity of care

  • A strong focus on clinical outcomes, with less space for emotional experience

A doula can help fill those gaps

What Support Without a Doula can feel like

Every experience is different, but many families describe:

  • Feeling unsure of what’s happening or what their options are

  • Wanting more guidance, but not knowing who to ask

  • Long wait times for support; that then comes with unclear guidance

  • Partners feeling pressure to “do everything” without support

  • “I didn’t know what I didn’t know” - aka I couldn’t advocate for myself

  • Moments during labor where things felt overwhelming or isolating

This isn’t about fear, it’s about awareness. Because when you know what’s possible, you can choose differently.

What Support With a Doula can feel like

Families who work with a doula often describe:

  • Feeling more prepared going into birth

  • Having someone who knows them in the room

  • Greater confidence in their decisions

  • A calmer, more grounded experience, even when things don’t go as planned

  • Partners feeling supported instead of overwhelmed

  • A softer, more supported transition into postpartum

Not because everything is “perfect” but because they weren’t navigating the experience alone.

A Question Worth Asking Yourself

Instead of asking “Do I need a doula?” try asking:

  • Do I want continuous support during labor from someone who knows and understands my wishes?

  • Do I want help understanding my options and navigating the medical setting?

  • Do I want my partner to feel supported too?

  • Do I want someone there who is focused entirely on me?

  • Do I care about continuity of care? Does it matter to me who is in the room?

If you’re answering “yes” to any of these questions, that’s where a doula can make a meaningful difference.

Final Thoughts

You’re allowed to be held, guided, and cared for not just medically, but emotionally and physically too. “Healthy Parent and Healthy Baby”  is THE BARE MINIMUM. You deserve more than bare minimum. We can do better.

The difference isn’t in what happens during your birth experience, It’s in how supported you feel while it’s happening. Let’s help you walk away feeling supported, informed, and truly held.
